In all, Microsoft said[1] its second-quarter net income declined to $5 billion, or 62 cents a share, down from $5.86 billion, or 71 cents a share, a year earlier.
CEO Satya Nadella has focused on cloud[2] services and mobile applications on slower growth in its traditional software business. "Businesses are also piloting Windows 10, which will drive deployments beyond 200 million[3] active devices", added Nadella.
Revenue from Productivity & Business segment declined 2%, down to $6.7 billion, as opposed to the 3% decline in the quarter prior, as the company transitioned from software licensing to Office 365 subscriptions for clients.

Revenue increased 44 percent to $5.8 billion in the quarter, which easily surpassed analyst estimates. Advertising revenue, meanwhile, was expected to grow by 45 percent to $5.2 billion.
Microsoft generated $25.7 billion in revenue for Q2 2016, largely driven by its Azure and Office 365 cloud offerings.
Total revenue, however, fell 10.1 percent to $23.80 billion, squeezed by a strong dollar as well as a weak personal computer market that has reduced demand for Microsoft's Windows operating system. The declining PC market still affected the company, even though Windows 10 released last summer, as Windows OEM[5] Pro revenue fell 6 per cent. In short, Microsoft has found some firm footing in the competitive cloud computing market.
Microsoft revenue for Azure, its cloud-computing platform, surged 140% excluding currency impacts, while server products and cloud services revenues were up 10%. Meanwhile, Microsoft reported that its success in monetizing its search advertising had grown by 29%, which it attributed to the integration of search into Windows 10.

According to thebroadband, Microsoft has told analysts to expect a similar drop in revenue in the coming quarter. The service revenue from the Intelligent Cloud (IC), grew from $5.9 billion to $6.4 billion over the same period.
Microsoft confirmed that its devices revenue sank 22 per cent, which can largely be attributed to its troubled smartphones business.
